Senior Backend Engineer, Database Core

About The Role

Join the team building entropyDB's core query and storage engine. You'll work directly on the Java/Spring Boot backend — SQL execution, transaction management, and the RocksDB-backed storage layer — taking the platform from alpha to production.

Key Responsibilities

• Implement real SQL query execution against the storage engine (parser is in place via Apache Calcite; execution is the current priority)
• Design and build indexing strategies for document, graph, vector, and time-series data models
• Harden the transaction layer: cross-request transaction lifecycle, isolation levels, deterministic ordering
• Write and maintain automated tests across the backend (unit, integration)
• Collaborate on API design across REST endpoints, the CLI, and client SDKs

Requirements

• 5+ years building production backend systems in Java
• Strong understanding of database internals: storage engines, MVCC, query planning, or transaction processing
• Experience with Spring Boot or comparable JVM frameworks
• Comfortable reading and reasoning about existing code before extending it, not just writing greenfield

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with RocksDB, LevelDB, or other LSM-tree storage engines
• Familiarity with Apache Calcite or other SQL parsing/optimization frameworks
• Exposure to distributed consensus (Raft, Paxos) or the Calvin protocol
