Analytics Engineer (BigQuery, dbt) - Independent Contractor

Context

Our client is migrating from legacy data sources to new sources in an environment where logic is split between dbt and BigQuery SQL. Documentation is incomplete, and part of the work requires reverse-engineering existing queries, understanding dataset dependencies, and validating differences between old and new outputs.

Responsibilities

• Analyze existing data models, SQL queries, and dataset dependencies
• Work across both dbt models and standalone BigQuery queries
• Investigate legacy logic and undocumented transformations
• Support migration from old sources to new sources
• Reconcile structural and numerical differences between datasets
• Identify root causes of discrepancies and propose remediation
• Document findings, assumptions, and transformation logic
• Partner with business stakeholders to validate whether outputs are coherent and usable

Requirements

• Strong SQL expertise
• Hands-on experience with BigQuery
• Hands-on experience with dbt (or equivalent)
• Strong understanding of data modeling and transformation logic
• Experience with data migration, reconciliation, or source-to-target mapping
• Ability to work independently in ambiguous, messy data environments
• Sufficient business understanding to challenge and validate data outputs
