Lead I - DevOps - Service Mesh Engineer - istio

Role description

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Service Mesh Engineer to support, manage, and optimize Istio service mesh environments. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Kubernetes, cloud-native networking, and microservices architecture, with hands-on experience deploying and maintaining Istio in production environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Deploy, configure, and manage Istio service mesh for Kubernetes-based applications.
• Monitor and troubleshoot service mesh components, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Implement security best practices, including mTLS, authorization policies, and authentication mechanisms within Istio.
• Work closely with development and operations teams to optimize microservices communication and observability using Istio.
• Design and implement Istio-based traffic management strategies, including routing, circuit breaking, load balancing, and canary deployments.
• Automate deployment and configuration of Istio components using Helm and other DevOps tools.
• Perform regular upgrades and maintenance of Istio and associated components.
• Provide technical guidance, documentation, and training to teams on Istio service mesh best practices.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Minimum of a bachelor's degree of an accredited university in computer science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field or equivalent work experience
• 5+ years of experience in service mesh configuration and administration, and enterprise system integration with internal and external business systems.
• Strong understanding of service mesh architecture, networking, and security principles.
• Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, OpenTelemetry, and Datadog.
• Proficiency in automation tools such as Helm, Terraform, or Ansible.
• 3+ years of hands-on experience with cloud platforms - Azure
• 3+ years of strong scripting skills in Bash or Python.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and GitOps methodologies.
• Familiarity with Certificate management.
• Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Preferred Qualifications:
• Istio Certified Associate or similar certification.
• Experience with multi-cluster or hybrid cloud service mesh deployments.
• Knowledge of service discovery and API gateways like Envoy or Kong.
