Back End Engineer

About the Role

Black Panda Consulting builds software products and platforms across multiple client engagements including an enterprise telemedicine platform powering patient and doctor apps, video consultations, payments, and integration with India’s national digital health system (ABDM/ABHA), alongside other active product builds.

What You’ll Do

• Design, build, and maintain REST APIs and microservices in both Java / Spring Boot and Node.js, choosing the right one for each job.
• Move between multiple products and pick up unfamiliar codebases quickly.
• Model data and write efficient queries in PostgreSQL — schema design, migrations, indexing.
• Integrate third‑party services: payment gateways (Razorpay), video (Agora/WebRTC), and notification providers.
• Deploy, run, and monitor services on AWS (EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda).
• Write clean, well‑tested, maintainable code — and review your teammates’ code.
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions) and keep deployments smooth.
• Handle sensitive health and payment data with a security‑first mindset.
• (If it interests you) help build AI/ML‑powered features and integrate model APIs.

Must‑Have Skills

• 2–3 years of professional backend experience, with hands‑on production work in both Java / Spring Boot and Node.js (Express or similar). This dual‑stack ability is essential — our projects use both.
• Strong REST API design and implementation — you understand how to structure clean, versioned endpoints.
• Solid SQL and relational‑database experience (PostgreSQL or MySQL).
• Working knowledge of core AWS services — EC2, S3, RDS, IAM at minimum.
• Sound grasp of authentication and authorization (JWT, OAuth2, role‑based access).
• Comfortable with debugging, structured logging, and writing unit/integration tests.
• Excellent Git hygiene — a hard requirement (see the dedicated section below).
• Able to context‑switch between products and learn new codebases quickly.
• Clear communication and the ability to own work in a small, fast‑moving team.

Git Hygiene — Non‑Negotiable

This is a genuine dealbreaker. We assess every candidate on it, and weak version‑control habits will not pass.

Bonus Skills (Strongly Preferred)

• Python / FastAPI — particularly for AI/ML integration.
• Experience integrating AI/ML models or LLM APIs (AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, or similar) — a major plus.
• Healthcare domain experience, or any exposure to FHIR / HL7 / ABDM — a major plus.
• Docker and containerized deployments.
• Message queues and caching (Redis, Celery, Kafka).
• Elasticsearch / OpenSearch for search features.
• Real‑time systems (WebSockets) and infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform).
• Flutter or any mobile experience — useful given our cross‑platform app work.
